Medical training course via video conference at the Charité Berlin
NOGGO-POST-ASCO - Medical training course via video conference at the Charité Berlin
Hamburg, Berlin (sha), On 23 June 2010 the 11th NOGGO-POST-ASCO took place at the Berlin Charité Virchow hospital. The latest results of the world's largest cancer conference by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO 4 to 8 June 2010) are discussed from a practical and extremely topical point of view at the NOGGO-POST-ASCO every year.
The conference was broadcast live to 15 German cities as well as to Austria (Innsbruck) and Switzerland (Zurich & Bern). To guarantee the interactive exchange of all conference participants, a straightforward satellite transmission was dispensed with and all locations were connected via video conferencing. Thus, about 1,100 people participated interactively in the conference without having to get into a car, train or plane.
After a preparatory period of some 4 months by Mediavent and ViDOFON, eight internationally recognised speakers were able to present their altogether 230 charts during the broadcast, taking up 3 hours of airtime by doing so. 60 - 70 people watched the broadcast at each reception point. The interactive discussion groups at which 24 questions from all locations could be discussed with the speakers at the Charité gained a lot of enthusiasm from the audience.
To avoid the costs which a multilateral television broadcast would have incurred, professional TV equipment (incl. studio) was connected to the high definition video conferencing system in Berlin as an input for recording. High definition video conferencing delivers such good quality that it equals the quality of pure satellite transmissions. The LifeSize high definition video conferencing system (LifeSize Room 200) was connected to a HD MCU (Multipoint Control Unit). This MCU was located in Hamburg at ViDOFON. The other locations were also connected to this by LifeSize video conferencing systems (LifeSize Express 200) and received and transmitted the images from or to Berlin at a transmission rate of HD 720p. All external speakers were able to link up to the conference via a web client video conference and transmit their lecture to Berlin and the other locations. The conference was also transmitted to the web and recorded for people who were not able to participate in it via a streaming server.
In the run-up high-availability symmetrical 2 MBit internet connections were laid and video conferencing systems were delivered and installed. A team consisting of 14 transmission and video conferencing technology specialists made the broadcast possible right there in Berlin. The event was attended to by a total of 17 technicians at each reception point.
"This interactive transmission technique is an absolute novelty both in the field of medical training courses and in the fields of media transmission and video conferencing which have been used for the first time together", Arwed Plate, VP Sales of ViDOFON AG pointed out, thereby emphasising the successful combination of the advantages of both technologies.
"A bilateral satellite transmission and consequently interactivity would be possible with the current state of technology, but the use of video conferencing considerably reduces expenditure for this event ", explained Bernd Scheunemann, CEO and founder of Mediavent GmbH .
Mediavent, as technical manager of the conference, used the Managed Service of ViDOFON AG. Thus, neither Mediavent nor GlaxoSmithKline tied up personnel and capital in the use of video conferencing technology and infrastructure. All systems were hired and administered by ViDOFON.
"The cooperation with ViDOFON AG as video conferencing specialists has enabled us to focus on our core competences and guarantee the smooth flow of the event", Bernd Scheunemann continued.
The main promoter of the conference is NOGGO, the Nord-Ostdeutsche Gesellschaft für Gynäkologische Onkologie, supported by GlaxoSmithKline and EuMeCom, one of the world leaders among research-orientated health companies. The technical implementation was attended to by Mediavent GmbH, the professional service provider for web and TV-based communication solutions for the health sector, and ViDOFON AG, the specialists in video conferencing solutions.
